Staying up late for FIFA? Doctor shares health risks and sleep tips

he ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, has football fans in India staying up late, with matches kicking off between 12.30am and 6.30am IST. While watching a few late-night games may seem harmless, repeated sleep disruption throughout the tournament, which ends on July 19 (July 20 IST), can affect physical and mental health, says Dr Lokesh Gutta, consultant, Department of Interventional Pulmonology, Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada.
"Sleep is essential for both the body and the brain to function at their best. It is also the time when the body repairs itself and restores energy for the next day. Adults generally require seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. Even a few days of inadequate sleep can leave a person feeling sluggish, tired, and unable to concentrate. It can also affect mood," he explains....
