Don't skip on protein this Sawan fast, experts share why
India, Aug. 3 -- With today being the first Sawan Somwar in the holy month of Shravan (Sawan), which began in most parts of India on July 30, many devotees are observing a fast. While cutting out pulses, grains, and non-vegetarian foods for vrat meals today honours tradition, it can leave a nutritional gap due to a drop in daily protein. But experts share why is it necessary to maintain healthy protein levels even during the fast.
Lovely Singh, nutritionist at Asian Hospital, Faridabad, says that consuming protein helps preserve muscles and control hunger during fasting. She says, "Spreading your protein intake across meals helps increase satiety and supports muscle health."
Without enough protein, people tend to overeat starchy and calorie- dense foods. Nutritionist Neha Ranglani pushes for diversifying the food intake rather than just relying only on fasting staples, sabudana or potatoes. "Pairing protein with fibre-rich vegetables and healthy fats helps stabilise blood sugar and keeps energy levels steady throughout the fasting period," she explains.
Experts suggest that Sawan fasting can help you reset your health, but only if you focus on nourishment rather than simply avoiding certain foods."Choose whole, minimally processed foods, prioritise protein and fibre, and remember that how you prepare your food is just as important as what you eat," Ranglani says....
