Don't let acidity crash the party this festive season
India, Oct. 12 -- With card parties, festive dinners and late-night celebrations filling up calendars, irregular meals and overeating can leave revellers dealing with acidity and bloating. Experts say a few changes to what and when you eat can help keep digestive discomfort in check.
Don't arrive starving at the buffet. "Have a small meal before leaving: vegetable poha, an idli with a little sambar, or a roti with cooked vegetables. If you are fasting, a small portion of lightly cooked potato or makhana works within your fasting rules. The idea is to arrive ready to enjoy food, not ready to attack the buffet," says nutritionist Kavita Devgan.
Gastroenterologist Dr Amit Mittal, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, warns against heavy meals after fasting. "This can cause a rapid blood-sugar spike and energy crash later and also overwhelm the digestive system, leading to bloating, acidity or even reflux," he says.
Eating too quickly, overeating and lying down soon after dinner can worsen reflux, while alcohol, fried foods and spicy dishes may trigger discomfort. "If you know that dinner will be late, eat your main meal at home and keep the party food to a small tasting plate. Ideally, finish eating at least three hours before bed," advises Devgan.
The next morning, Devgan recommends water, a light breakfast and saunf tea for bloating, while avoiding lemon-water 'detox' drinks if they worsen acidity. "If heartburn keeps returning, affects sleep or requires frequent medication, it deserves medical attention rather than repeated self-treatment," warns Dr Pankaj Sharma, bariatric surgeon, Fortis Hospital....
