Sickle cell disease: Diet and nutrition that support blood health and reduce crisis risk
New Delhi, Sept. 10 -- Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder in which a mutation in the HBB gene results in the production of abnormal hemoglobin, causing red blood cells to become stiff, sickle, or crescent-shaped. This impairs oxygen transport. Abnormal hemoglobin in red blood cells makes them less flexible, hindering their passage through small blood vessels and blocking blood flow. This can result in a sudden onset of pain and cause a pain crisis, infection, eye problems, stroke, and other health complications. Because of blocked blood flow, these acute pain episodes are also called sickle cell crises. Managing the disease requires treatment and prevention of complications.
