India, July 23 -- The first thing you notice in a good Meghalayan homestay is not the thread count. It could be the quiet display of local crafts, the smell of something being cooked in the kitchen, the pride in the view outside, or the host who tells you which road, bridge, or trail is worth attempting after rain.

This is not the conventional language of luxury.
