The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal sovereign nations that work together to promote democracy, peace, sustainable development, trade and human rights. Headquartered in London, the organisation represents around 2.7 billion people, with more than 60% of its population aged under 30. Most member nations are former territories of the British Empire, although several countries, including Mozambique, Rwanda, Gabon and Togo, joined despite having no direct constitutional links to Britain.
