India, April 3 -- A US fighter jet was shot down over Iran, with one of the two crew members rescued by American forces, according to multiple media reports. The aircraft has been identified as an F-15E Strike Eagle, a two-seat combat jet typically operated by a pilot and a weapons systems officer, as reported by The New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Iranian state media earlier claimed its forces had downed the American jet and released footage that appeared to show wreckage of the aircraft.
