India, Aug. 25 -- Wholesale sugar prices have fallen by around 15% after the Centre's decision to allow duty-free imports of 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar and intensify action against hoarding. However, the decline in wholesale rates has not yet translated into a comparable fall in retail prices, leaving households waiting for cheaper sugar.
According to a Times of India, traders and mills responded quickly to the government's measures, with factory-gate prices falling by around Rs 800 per quintal over the past three days. Wholesale sugar is now around Rs 62 per kg, while retail prices remain near Rs 75 per kg in the markets cited in the report.
