India, Sept. 27 -- Violence escalated at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, on Sunday, September 27, as student protests over an alleged rape case turned violent. Police vehicles were damaged and one police jeep was set on fire, while protesters allegedly hurled stones at police personnel, according to reports. Police used force to disperse the crowd as tensions rose on the university campus.

The protests began after reports circulated about an alleged sexual assault involving a female student at the university. An FIR has since been registered on the statement of a student, with police saying the allegations will be investigated through CCTV footage, forensic material and other digital and technical evidence.
