NSO spurs BESS to cut fossil fuel dependence
SriLanka, June 14 -- Sri Lanka will move ahead with the second phase of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) procurement following the implementation of its first 160 MW grid-scale battery storage program, National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd. (NSO) Chairman Dr. Pradeep Kumara said.
He said the country is expected to add between 1,000 MW and 1,500 MW of BESS capacity by 2029 to support the rapid expansion of renewable energy.
"The Cabinet has approved the second BESS tender of 250 MW," Dr. Kumara told the Sunday Observer. "It will be floated as soon as approval is received from the Attorney General for the tender documents and legal agreements."
