India, May 4 -- Dismissing viral claims of a severe power crisis, the government's fact-checking unit PIB Fact Check on Sunday said there is no coal shortage or grid failure in the country, terming such reports as misleading.
The clarification followed a widely circulated social media post alleging record power demand of 277 GW, critical coal shortages at thermal plants, and load-shedding in multiple states amid rising summer temperatures.
Refuting the claims, the government stated that India's power system remains stable and adequately supplied. The maximum peak demand recorded on May 2, 2026, stood at 229 GW, which was fully met without any shortage.
