Manila, July 15 -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has designated Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento as chairperson of the Government Peace Implementing Panel (GPIP) for the Bangsamoro peace process.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro made the announcement Wednesday during a press briefing in Malacanang.

As GPIP chair, Sarmiento will oversee the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the landmark 2014 peace accord that ended decades of armed conflict in Mindanao and paved the way for the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
