Imphal, April 7 -- A cadre of the proscribed People's Liberation Army (PLA) escaped from police custody in Manipur on Monday, leading to the suspension of a police officer and a constable.

The escaped insurgent has been identified as Nepram Lemba Meitei alias Tomba (24), who fled from the custody of Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district after being taken out of the lock-up to urinate, police said.

According to reports, he managed to escape when police personnel escorting him outside the lock-up allowed him out briefly.

Nepram Lemba Meitei, son of N. Deva and a resident of Nongada Shantipur Makha Leikai in Imphal East, was arrested by security forces on March 31 from the Khabeisoi area under Heingang Police Station.
