Imphal: An exchange of gunfire broke out between armed volunteers from the Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur's Ukhrul district on Thursday afternoon, prompting security forces to rush to the area, reports said.

The incident took place at the inter-village boundaries of Sharkapung and Mongkot Chephu under Litan Police Station at around 2:30 pm.

According to reports, armed Kuki militants allegedly opened fire from nearby Mongkot Chephu village targeting Sharkapung village after a lull of nearly 20 days in hostilities in the area.

Naga village guards reportedly retaliated after the armed group attempted to advance towards the village. The exchange of fire lasted for around 20 minutes.
