Imphal, Aug. 10 -- The Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has assured comprehensive central support for the conservation and protection of the historic Manipuri Pony.

The assurance came in response to a special mention raised in Parliament by former Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, who drew attention to the declining population and vulnerable status of the indigenous breed.

During the parliamentary session on March 17, Sanajaoba called for immediate intervention to protect the Manipuri Pony, which holds deep cultural and sporting significance in Manipur. Polo and equestrian organisations in Imphal have also raised concerns over the alleged theft, slaughter and illegal meat trade involving the breed.
