Imphal, Sept. 11 -- The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has flagged mounting fiscal pressure in Manipur, with the state's outstanding public debt rising to Rs 16,193.78 crore at the end of 2024-25, of which Rs 10,638.89 crore is due for repayment within the next 10 years.

The state's fiscal deficit stood at 4.16% of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) during the year, exceeding the 3% ceiling prescribed under the Manipur Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act.

The CAG also found that the government overstated its revenue surplus and understated its fiscal deficit by Rs 0.61 crore after revenue expenditure was incorrectly classified as capital expenditure. In addition, the state incurred an unbudgeted Rs 96...
