New Delhi, Sept. 5 -- The United Nations has warned that the world is on track to cross the 1.5degC global warming limit within the next few years, urging governments to take faster action against climate change.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said extreme heat, wildfires and deadly floods are signs of the growing risks from a warming planet.

Guterres called for a faster shift away from fossil fuels, greater use of renewable energy and stronger protection for forests and oceans. He said it is still possible to bring warming back below 1.5degC by the end of the century if countries significantly strengthen their climate efforts.
