New Delhi, April 15 -- The last day to file a US income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is 15 April. However, taxpayers who need more time can request an extension to avoid late-filing penalties.
Instead of filing by 15 April, you can submit a short form to the IRS and receive an automatic extension until 15 October. The form requires basic details such as your name, address, Social Security number, and an estimate of taxes owed or refund.
The extension applies only to filing, not payment. Taxes owed must still be paid by the April deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
"Make sure you pay any tax you owe by the April filing date. The extension is only for filing your return," the official IRS website states.
