Imphal, Sept. 11 -- US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Imphal on Friday for a two-day visit to Manipur, a state still dealing with the effects of ethnic conflict. He was joined by Kathy Giles-Diaz, the US Consul General in Kolkata.
Soon after landing, Gor headed to Ema Keithel, widely known as the world's largest all-women market. The market, whose name means "Mother's Market," dates back to the 16th century, and Gor spent time talking with women vendors there. He then went to Kangla Fort, once the administrative seat of the former Kingdom of Manipur and a major historical site in the region.
Later, Gor met Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh at the Secretariat in Mantripukhri. Singh spoke about tourism as an area with room for growth and cooperation between the two countries. He also invited Gor to attend the Manipur Sangai Festival, set for late November, and noted that the state is home to 36 different communities.
Sharing his thoughts on X, Gor wrote, "Enjoyed hearing from Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh about his vision for Manipur. We exchanged ideas about how the US and India can work together to expand economic ties."
Singh responded on the same platform, saying he was confident ties between the US and Manipur would grow stronger going forward.
Gor's day ended with a visit to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla's residence, where the two discussed continued cooperation between the US and India. Gor is set to leave Imphal on Saturday, closing out his brief but eventful trip to the northeastern state.
