Jalpaiguri, July 30 -- Political tension ran high in Jalpaiguri on Thursday as Trinamool Congress leader Pranayita Das was allegedly assaulted outside Jalpaiguri Kotwali Police Station, while Municipality chairman Saikat Chatterjee was targeted in a separate egg-throwing incident at his chamber.

Pranayita Das, Karmadhyaksha (Health) of the Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad and daughter of TMC district leader and Jalpaiguri Assembly candidate Krishna Das, appeared before Jalpaiguri Kotwali Police Station for questioning following a court directive.

She is among the accused in a case related to an alleged post-election attack in which six BJP workers were reportedly injured with sharp weapons a day after the Assembly election results were declared.As she arrived at the police station, a group of women protesters allegedly blocked her vehicle and hurled eggs at it. Tension escalated when police attempted to escort her out, with some protesters allegedly pulling her by the hair and assaulting her.

Protester Rupali Karmakar alleged: "For a long time, Krishna Das and his daughter harassed BJP workers and local residents. We are here demanding justice."

Pranayita Das declined to comment. In a separate incident later in the day, Jalpaiguri Municipality chairman Saikat Chatterjee was allegedly targeted with eggs inside his office, shortly after nine councillors from his own party submitted a no-confidence motion against him.

According to sources, a group of youths barged into his chamber while he was in a meeting and allegedly hurled eggs at him, triggering tension inside the municipal premises.
