BALURGHAT, July 16 -- Ripon Saha, a mathematics professor from Patiram in South Dinajpur district, has been selected to participate in the prestigious International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026, to be held in Philadelphia, USA, from July 21 to 30. His selection has brought pride not only to South Dinajpur but also to neighbouring North Dinajpur, where he serves as a Professor of Mathematics at Raiganj University.

A resident of Shib Mandir Para in Patiram, Saha is also serving as the Additional Controller of Examinations at South Dinajpur University. Held once every four years, the International Congress of Mathematicians is regarded as the world's most prestigious gathering of mathematicians. The event is also known for the presentation of the globally acclaimed Fields Medal.

At the conference, Saha will present his research in algebra and interact with some of the world's leading mathematicians during the 11-day event. A research poster showcasing India's work in algebra will also be displayed at the congress.

Speaking about the opportunity, Saha said: "Participating in the International Congress of Mathematicians is a cherished dream for every mathematician.

The conference brings together Fields Medal winners and the world's foremost researchers. It offers a rare opportunity to present one's research on a global platform and exchange ideas with brilliant mathematicians from across the world."

Recalling his journey, he said: "I spent my childhood in extreme poverty. I never imagined that I would one day get the opportunity to attend such a prestigious international conference. This honour is not mine alone-it belongs to my village, my district and my university."

Saha completed his schooling at Patiram High School before earning his B.Sc. from Jadavpur University, his M.Sc. from Kanpur, and his Ph.D. from Jadavpur University. He has previously presented his research at international conferences in Italy (2015), Spain and France (2022), the Philippines (2023), Sweden (2024), and China (2025). His participation in the ICM 2026 marks another significant milestone in his distinguished academic career and is being celebrated across the region.
