Chandigarh, Oct. 25 -- Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday said citizens must remain conscious of their rights while fulfilling their duties towards the country, asserting that democracy becomes stronger when both go hand in hand.

Addressing the 33rd Annual Lecture-cum-Lokmanthan programme organised by Panchnad Shodh Sansthan in Chandigarh on the theme 'Hum Bharat Ke Log, Hamara Dayitva', he announced a grant of Rs 11 lakh for the institute's research activities.

Saini said fundamental duties under Article 51A of the Constitution included respecting constitutional ideals, protecting national unity, promoting social harmony, safeguarding cultural heritage and preserving nature. He stressed that differences in language, religion, caste and region should not undermine mutual respect and national unity.

He highlighted Haryana's contributions through its soldiers, farmers and sportspersons and referred to employment opportunities being arranged for Agniveers in state government jobs. Officials have been directed to issue joining letters as soon as the first batch arrives, he said.

The chief minister also highlighted natural farming and the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, stressing girls' education, dignity and equal opportunities.
