
Kolkata, Sept. 28 -- Union Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy reviewed the activities, achievements and future roadmap of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) at a meeting in Kolkata, focusing on mineral security, critical-mineral exploration and advanced technologies.
During Field Season 2026-27, GSI is undertaking around 500 mineral exploration projects, including approximately 300 focused on critical and strategic minerals.
It is also intensifying exploration for concealed and deep-seated deposits using integrated geological, geophysical and geochemical investigations.
Reddy stressed accelerated exploration in prospective areas and faster progression of high-potential mineral occurrences from discovery to resource establishment and development. He called for timely, outcome-oriented projects to support domestic supply chains, reduce import dependence and aid India's clean-energy transition.
Mines Secretary Keshav Chandra called for a technology-driven, integrated approach using multidisciplinary datasets, advanced analytical capabilities and inter-agency collaboration.
GSI Director General Varsha Ashok Aglawe outlined plans involving AI/ML, 3D/4D geological modelling, Pan-India magnetotelluric surveys & a nationwide subsurface critical-mineral potential map.
GSI is undertaking 58 Geoinformatics & Data Analysis projects during Field Season 2026-27.
