Chandigarh, Sept. 8 -- Punjab Local Government minister Harjot Singh Bains on Tuesday announced the extension of the state-wide 'Cleanliness Campaign 2.0' till September 12, citing strong public participation and resolution of more than 83 per cent of civic complaints. He also announced four mega cleanliness drives over the next four Saturdays across all 166 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
Launched on August 29, the campaign covers 14 Municipal Corporations and 152 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats. Addressing a press conference, Bains said citizens had lodged 6,459 complaints through the M-Seva app, of which 5,407, or over 83 per cent, had been resolved on the ground.
He said the four mega drives would begin on September 12 and involve NGOs, market associations, youth clubs, religious organisations and Resident Welfare Associations. He appealed to citizens to spare two to three hours on Saturday mornings to clean parks, markets and neighbourhoods.
Bains said the Local Government Department had also implemented door-to-door garbage collection across cities to prevent the recurrence of Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs). He urged residents to retain waste until collection vehicles arrive and warned that littering in public places would attract strict fines after the awareness phase.
The minister said he personally visited Kurali, Kharar and Nangal and witnessed sanitation workers' efforts.
