Balurghat, Aug. 30 -- Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to visit Balurghat on September 2, with preparations gaining momentum across the district ahead of his proposed tour. The Chief Minister is expected to inspect Balurghat Airport and the district hospital, where a medical college has been proposed. He is also likely to hold an administrative meeting at Rabindra Bhavan to review various development projects in South Dinajpur.
Balurghat MP and Union minister of state Sukanta Majumdar said the date for the Chief Minister's visit had been finalised. "The Chief Minister will visit the district on September 2. I have been pursuing the reopening of Balurghat Airport for a long time. The airport will be made operational and the Chief Minister will inspect it during his visit," Majumdar said.
He added that a medical college would be developed at Balurghat District Hospital and that the Chief Minister would inspect the hospital before attending the administrative meeting.
According to district administration sources, cleaning and maintenance work has already begun at Balurghat Airport ahead of the visit. Although the basic infrastructure is in place, the airport premises had become overgrown with weeds and vegetation due to prolonged non-use. The approach road and areas surrounding the office buildings are being cleaned.
Preparations are also underway at Balurghat District Hospital. A design for the proposed medical college has already been prepared and is expected to be shown to the Chief Minister. He may also inspect different wards and other parts of the hospital. A JCB has been deployed on the hospital premises to clear accumulated waste and drain stagnant water.
Balurghat MLA Bidyut Kumar Roy is overseeing the work. "Various works are underway at the hospital ahead of the Chief Minister's visit. I have inspected the ongoing preparations," Roy said.
