Balurghat, Nov. 6 -- The investigation into the murder of Seema Sarkar Ghosh, a resident of Ward 4 in Gangarampur, South Dinajpur, gathered pace on Thursday with the arrest of her mother-in-law, Bani Ghosh. Seema's husband, Rintu Ghosh, was arrested on Wednesday, when the murder came to light. Police detained Bani for questioning following allegations by the victim's family. She was arrested after investigators reportedly found inconsistencies in her statements.

A five-member forensic team from Jalpaiguri reached Rintu's two-storey residence accompanied by Gangarampur police. The experts examined the premises for 90 minutes. Rintu had allegedly sat there with his wife's severed head.

After receiving details from police, the team inspected first-floor rooms, focusing on the room where Seema was allegedly murdered. Several samples were collected before the experts moved to the temple. They examined the altar and the spot where Rintu had allegedly sat with the severed head, collecting blood samples, fingerprints and other possible evidence. Measurements of the altar and temple were also taken to document the crime scene.

A team member tried to speak to a local woman about Rintu and his family. However, she reportedly stopped cooperating after noticing a small camera attached to the expert's clothing. The team also declined to comment.

Rintu was produced before the Gangarampur Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday and remanded to seven days of police custody. He appeared physically fit while being taken for a medical examination and then to court. Asked why he had allegedly killed his wife, Rintu reacted angrily. "Take me to the medical college and cut me open. I have committed a crime and will face punishment."

The couple's two minor children, studying in classes VII and I, have been left without either parent at home. With their mother dead and father in custody, they have been placed in a home in Balurghat.
