Meerut, Oct. 16 -- A court here on Friday sentenced a woman and her lover to death for strangling her husband and placing a live snake beside his body to make the murder appear to be a case of snakebite, officials said. This is the second death sentence awarded by a Meerut court in a murder case this week.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Jaiveer Singh Nagar awarded the death penalty to Ravita and Amardeep for murdering Amit Kashyap, a resident of Akbarpur Sadat village.

Amit was found dead on a cot at his house on April 13, 2025, with a live snake beside him. However, a post-mortem examination established strangulation as the cause of death.

Ravita and Amardeep allegedly developed a relationship eight to nine months before the murder. After Amit learnt about it, disputes frequently broke out between the couple.

Investigators said Amardeep arranged the snake on April 12, 2025. Later that night, Ravita allegedly called him home after Amit fell asleep. Ravita held her husband's mouth shut while Amardeep strangled him, following which they placed the snake beside his body to mislead investigators.

The prosecution examined 12 witnesses during the trial. The testimony of a snake charmer and the accused's call detail records proved crucial, officials said. The case was pursued under the UP Police's 'Operation Conviction' campaign.
