Jalpaiguri, May 13 -- Police of Maynaguri Police Station arrested Tapan Majumdar, former Health Karmadhyaksha of the Maynaguri Panchayat Samiti and currently associated with the BJP, on charges of allegedly collecting money from people by promising them membership in organisations linked to the saffron camp, including Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
According to allegations, the accused exploited the growing interest among people in joining saffron-linked organisations following recent political developments. He allegedly lured people by promising them membership and organisational posts in religious outfits such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. Victims were reportedly asked to pay amounts ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 in exchange for membership and positions within the organisations.
The matter came to the notice of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders, following which a written complaint was lodged at Maynaguri Police Station on Tuesday. Acting on the complaint, police arrested Tapan Majumdar on Wednesday and produced him before the Jalpaiguri court.
The court rejected his bail plea and remanded him to 20 days of judicial custody.
Majumdar, a resident of Uttar Saptibari in Maynaguri, was previously associated with the All India Trinamool Congress and served as Health Karmadhyaksha of the Maynaguri Panchayat Samiti from 2018 to 2023. Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad district secretary Shubhankar Dutta said there is a proper procedure for joining the organisation and no money is required for membership, urging people to remain cautious against such alleged fraud.
