Balurghat, Oct. 28 -- A 47-year-old migrant worker allegedly died by suicide near his residence in South Dinajpur's Katakole, under Kumarganj block's Mohona Gram Panchayat, on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Bhola Hansda, originally from Tajpur.
According to local sources, Hansda was living alone in Katakole following the death of his first wife and the dissolution of his second marriage. Although he worked outside the state as a migrant laborer, he had returned home ahead of Durga Puja.
During his absence, police had visited his residence multiple times regarding several pending cases. His failure to appear in court eventually led to the issuance of an arrest warrant. Family and local accounts suggest that Hansda was under severe mental distress due to the pending cases, the fear of police action and mounting financial struggles to afford legal proceedings.
Locals discovered his hanging body on Tuesday and alerted the authorities. A team from Kumarganj Police Station recovered the body and sent it to Balurghat District Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Local Panchayat member Buli Kisku confirmed that Hansda lived alone and faced pending cases, though the immediate trigger remains unclear. Police have launched an investigation into all aspects of the incident.
