Leh, Oct. 19 -- Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday launched 'Ladakh Sanjeevani Seva', a round-the-clock ambulance service covering 248 villages across all seven districts of the Union Territory. Residents can access the service through emergency helpline 108.

The service operates with a fleet of 73 ambulances manned by trained drivers to respond to medical emergencies, including road accidents, high-altitude incidents and cases requiring urgent hospital transport. Each village has been mapped to a designated ambulance and driver, with every vehicle linked to the nearest health centre. The ambulances are located around 13 km from the villages they serve, on average.

Special arrangements have been made for maternal healthcare, with more than 1,100 pregnant women included in a centralised database. The service will also assist patients suffering from cancer, kidney and heart diseases, stroke and serious lung ailments who require repeated hospital visits.

Calling the initiative a significant milestone, Saxena said no resident should be denied timely medical care.
