Leh, Sept. 3 -- Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Thursday approved the creation of Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) in all seven districts of the Union Territory, paving the way for elected local self-governance in five newly created districts, officials said.
The move follows the Centre's July 13 decision to extend the LAHDC framework across Ladakh. Councils will now be established in Leh, Kargil, Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass.
So far, elected hill councils existed only in Leh and Kargil. Their extension to the five new districts is expected to strengthen grassroots participation in planning and development.
Saxena thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying the move would decentralise governance and make development more responsive to local needs.
