Chandigarh, Oct. 8 -- Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday said the party and the INDIA bloc would continue their agitation until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns, alleging irregularities in the electoral process.
The former Haryana chief minister and Leader of Opposition, made the remarks at a "Save Democracy, Save Votes, Save the Country" march in Ambala organised by Congress MLA Nirmal Singh and INDIA bloc parties.
Haryana Congress in-charge Sanjay Dutt and state president Rao Narendra Singh were also present.
Thousands of protesters participated in the march, raising slogans over alleged "vote theft". They burned an effigy of Kumar outside the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum addressed to the President. The protesters demanded Kumar's resignation and called for elections to be conducted using ballot papers.
Hooda alleged that the Congress' campaign against what it describes as vote theft and irregularities by the Election Commission would intensify. He also criticised the BJP over police action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during opposition protests in Delhi.
Hooda claimed that Congress had received broad public support across communities in the 2024 Haryana elections but alleged that the results did not reflect the sentiment on the ground. He said he had questioned the results from the outset and that a subsequent Congress investigation had raised concerns over alleged vote manipulation.
Dutt alleged that questions raised by the Congress over the Haryana election results had not been answered. He questioned changes in the reported voter turnout, saying it rose from 61.19 per cent on the night of polling to 65.65 per cent the next day and 67.9 per cent before counting.
