Chandigarh, Aug. 25 -- Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday directed officials to convert all old water works where groundwater mixing is affecting water quality into reinforced cement concrete (RCC)-based structures and prioritise the conversion of tubewell-based water works into canal-based systems wherever feasible.
Chairing a meeting to review drinking water supply across the state, Saini said providing safe drinking water was a priority and directed officials to ensure uninterrupted supply. Public Health Engineering Minister Ranbir Singh Gangwa was also present.
Officials said Haryana currently has 1,888 canal-based water works, 4,199 boosting stations, 12,404 tubewells and five Ranney Well schemes. Work is underway on 103 new canal-based water works, 1,065 tubewells, 369 boosting stations and two Ranney Wells.
Of the 7,005-km distribution network, 1,525 km of pipelines need replacement, with 837 km targeted for completion by March 2027. As many as 466 brick-built water works are being converted into RCC structures at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore.
Saini said directed officials to plan new water works as per population.
