Balurghat, Aug. 27 -- The BJP's disciplinary committee has issued a show-cause notice to Gangarampur MLA Satyendranath Roy over his alleged "unprecedented" attack on Balurghat MP and Union minister of state Sukanta Majumdar on social media. Roy has been asked to submit a written explanation within seven days, triggering fresh speculation over growing differences within the BJP in South Dinajpur.
According to party sources, the notice, signed by state disciplinary committee chief Pratap Bandyopadhyay, was served to Roy on Wednesday.
The action follows a video message posted by Roy on social media in which he allegedly targeted both Majumdar and Trinamool Congress Harirampur MLA Biplab Mitra. Roy had criticised the two leaders after Mitra recently praised Majumdar. Without naming them directly, Roy allegedly described them as "thieves who are cousins" and claimed that there was a "secret understanding" between some leaders of the ruling and opposition camps.
The development has brought to the fore growing differences between Roy and the party leadership. Although Roy's name had reportedly been discussed for a ministerial berth, he was ultimately not included. His absence from the list of presidents of governing bodies of several colleges also fuelled speculation about his dissatisfaction.
Roy had earlier questioned the opening of an MP's office in Gangarampur and Majumdar's nomination as president of the governing body of Gangarampur College.
South Dinajpur BJP president Swarup Chowdhury said the party believed in discipline and that grievances should be raised through organisational channels rather than social media. He said he had learnt that the state committee had issued a show-cause notice to the Gangarampur MLA. Attempts to contact Roy for his reaction were unsuccessful.
