Motihari, Oct. 2 -- Four girls drowned while bathing in a pond in Bihar's East Champaran district on Friday morning, police said.

The incident occurred around 9.30 am in Bankat village under Paharpur police station.

The deceased were

identified as sisters Sonawati Kumari (13) and Phoolwati Kumari (10), and Sonali Kumari (10) and Pratibha Kumari (12), all residents of the village.

Paharpur Circle Officer Ramsurat Paswan said five girls had gone to the pond to bathe. While one stayed on the bank, the other four entered the water and reportedly drowned after venturing into deeper waters.

Police recovered all four bodies and sent them to Motihari Sadar Hospital for postmortem, SHO Devendra Kumar said.
