Dibrugarh, Nov. 6 -- One person was killed and six others sustained critical burn injuries following an explosion and fire at an Oil India Ltd (OIL) facility in Assam's Dibrugarh district on Friday.
The incident occurred around 9.05 am during maintenance work at the Intermediate Tank Farm in Tengakhat, according to a statement issued by the public sector undertaking.
Preliminary information suggested that an accidental mishap during maintenance operations triggered the explosion and subsequent fire. Nine workers were present at the site when the incident occurred, of whom seven sustained injuries. One of them later succumbed, the company said.
The deceased was identified as Raju Dutta. He and the six injured workers were employees of Mumbai-based Spectron Engineers Private Limited, a contractor engaged by OIL.
The injured workers, whose burn injuries range from 35 to 90 per cent, are undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh. Hospital superintendent Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan said their condition was critical and being constantly monitored.
OIL said its fire service personnel were immediately mobilised and brought the blaze under control.
Dibrugarh District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip and other officials visited the site. A State Disaster Response Force team and firefighting personnel also reached the facility.
Kairi said there was no active fire and the situation was completely under control.
