Two earthquakes strike Indonesia and the Philippines
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 2 -- Two moderate earthquakes struck parts of Indonesia and the Philippines within a day of each other, with no tsunami threat to Malaysia reported following the quake in West Papua.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said a 5.3-magnitude earthquake was detected in West Papua, Indonesia, at 8.04am today.
It said the quake was centred about 159 kilometres southwest of Jayapura at coordinates 3.4 degrees south and 139.6 degrees east, with a depth of 60 kilometres.
MetMalaysia said there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the earthquake.
Separately, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said a 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Mindanao in the Philippines at 1.22pm local time on Tuesd...
