KOTA BARU, Aug. 31 -- About 60,000 Malaysians are expected to spend an estimated RM36 million in southern Thailand during the five-day Merdeka Day and school holiday period.

The New Straits Times reported Thailand-Asean Halal Trade and Tourism Association president Aida Oujeh as saying the estimate covered travellers entering the country from August 29 to September 2.

The projected expenditure was based on average spending of RM600 per tourist on accommodation, food, shopping and leisure activities.

"The main destinations are Hat Yai, Phatthalung, Satun, Betong, Bangkok and Krabi.

"Hotels in popular destinations are about 95 per cent booked, reflecting strong demand from Malaysian tourists during the holiday period," she was quoted as...
