Indonesia backs US prosecution of alleged Bali bombing mastermind Hambali after 23 years
JAKARTA, July 25 -- Indonesia has welcomed the United States' decision to prosecute terrorism suspect Encep Nurjaman, better known as Hambali, who has been held at Guantanamo Bay for more than 20 years.
"Since he was captured by American agents and detained in Guantanamo, it is better for us to welcome the US government to prosecute this case," Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said yesterday, Indonesian news outlet Tempo reported.
Yusril said Indonesia continues to receive updates on Hambali's case from the US military but has no plans to seek his return.
"The Indonesian government has no intention to repatriate him here," he was quoted as saying.
