KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 -- The government is expected to seek an increase in the maximum compound rate for more than 700 road traffic offences to RM500 via proposed amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987, according to a report.

Berita Harian reported today that the Transport Ministry is expected to table the proposed increase for first reading during the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament, which begins today and runs until July 16.

The current maximum compound for various traffic summonses issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the police, including reckless driving, speeding, driving without a valid licence or road tax, and running a red light, is RM300.
