KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into five individuals suspected of spreading false information on the social media platform Threads about an impending fuel price hike.
In a statement today, the commission confirmed that three of the five suspects have already been called in to have their statements recorded to assist with the probe.
The viral content, which falsely claimed that petrol and diesel prices would increase, was deemed misleading and capable of causing public anxiety.
MCMC noted that the misinformation had been edited to mimic the visual identity of television broadcaster Buletin TV3.
