NEW YORK, Sept. 23 -- Avery Garcia, known online as "Avery the Poke Kid", has died at the age of 12 after a long battle with pancreatoblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood pancreatic cancer.

Avery built a large following on social media through his love of Pokemon, sharing videos of card openings, collection showcases and updates on his cancer journey. Despite years of surgeries, treatments and hospital stays, he remained an upbeat presence who inspired fellow Pokemon fans around the world.

In the days before his death, supporters helped Avery reach one of his biggest goals by pushing his YouTube channel past 100,000 subscribers, earning him the platform's Silver Play Button.
