LONDON, June 18 -- Tom Hanks has spent more than three decades bringing everyone's favourite cowboy to life - but it turns out there was one very important thing he never knew about Woody.

During a recent appearance on BBC Radio 1, Hanks was left genuinely stunned after discovering that his beloved Toy Story character actually has a surname, despite having voiced Woody since the franchise debuted in 1995.

"By the way, I only recently discovered that Woody has a surname. Are you aware that Woody has a surname?" host Ali Plumb asked.

Hanks' answer? Complete surprise.

The Oscar winner admitted he had "no idea" before jokingly wondering if Woody's full name might simply be "The Sheriff?"
