U'khand varsity asst prof held for leaking exam questions
Dehradun, July 24 -- Dehradun police have arrested the assistant professor of a private engineering college for allegedly compromising the confidentiality of the Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU) examination system by sharing questions with students through a WhatsApp group and an internal online portal before a semester examination, police said on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Ashish Kumar Gupta, 40, an assistant professor at Shivalik College of Engineering in Jhajhra, was arrested following an investigation into allegations that he had circulated important examination-related questions ahead of a university examination. According to SSP Dehradun Pramendra Dobhal, Dr Vinay Kumar Patel, Controller of Examinations at Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University, submitted a written complaint at Premnagar police station on Thursday.
The complaint stated that the university had received an email concerning an examination conducted on July 8 as part of its even-semester examinations. According to the complaint, on July 3, Gupta allegedly shared certain important questions on a WhatsApp group.
After the examination was conducted, the questions circulated before the exam were compared with the actual question paper. The university found significant similarities between the two, raising suspicion of a possible leak of examination-related material.
An internal inquiry committee subsequently constituted by the university also found that the accused had allegedly shared examination-related questions with students through the institution's internal portal as well as WhatsApp before the examination, police said.
Dobhal said the accused had allegedly compromised the confidentiality of the university's examination system with the intention of providing an unfair advantage to students.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at Premnagar police station under Sections 316, 318(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police said.
In view of the seriousness of the allegations, SSP Dobhal said he directed police officials to ensure prompt collection of evidence and take effective legal action against the accused.
Acting on the directions, police arrested Gupta after examining witness statements and other documentary and material evidence collected during the investigation, police said.
Dobhal said electronic devices recovered from the accused are currently being examined as part of the investigation. The probe is also underway to ascertain whether other people were involved in the alleged leakage or circulation of examination-related material.
SSP Dobhal said further legal action would be taken against other individuals, if their involvement emerges during the investigation and is established by the evidence collected by police. The arrested accused is a native of Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh
Meanwhile, Rakesh Singh Bhandari, registrar Shivalik College of Engineering said, "In view of the findings of the University and given the seriousness of the misconduct, breach of trust and professional ethics, the services of the Assistant Professor Ashish Kumar Gupta have been terminated with immediate effect."...
