New Delhi, July 25 -- The Supreme Court on Friday demanded clear answers from the Centre on whether it was keen to shift NEET-UG to a computer-based test (CBT), issues of data protection that may arise in that case, and implementation of earlier expert committee reports, as it pointed out that heightened measures such as deploying the Air Force this year can only be an ad-hoc measure and the effort should be to institutionalise the mechanism. A bench of justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe said, "We cannot let such a situation go on like this. We have to focus on institutionalisation. Ad-hocism is what has troubled us for so many years." The court's observations came while hearing a batch of petitions filed by Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) and United Doctors Front (UDF), among others, demanding replacing the National Testing Agency (NTA) with a statutory body that is accountable. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, pointed out the issue was being supervised at the highest executive level as the government was going "ten extra miles" to address the problems faced by children....
