PATNA, Sept. 20 -- India's next phase of economic transformation will require not only major structural reforms but also sustained efforts to simplify government processes, remove bottlenecks and make regulations more transparent and predictable, Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council member Sanjeev Sanyal said in Patna on Saturday. Delivering the sixth Manoj Srivastava annual memorial lecture on "The Art of Doing Economic Reforms", organised by the Equity Foundation, Sanyal said some of the biggest gains could come from fixing seemingly small problems such as delayed files, unnecessary approvals, cumbersome forms and government systems that do not communicate with each other. He described such changes as "process reforms" - practical interventions that improve the functioning of existing systems without necessarily altering their basic structure.
