Patna roads ready for Puja rush as traffic curbs kick in
PATNA, Oct. 18 -- With Durga Puja pandals throwing open their gates and crowds already starting to build, the city's traffic police have put a firm lid on the usual chaos. The special plan kicks in at 3 pm on Saturday and stays in place till 10 pm on October 20.
The biggest pinch will be felt right in the heart of town. The entire stretch from Dak Bungalow Crossing to Kotwali is off-limits to regular traffic, both sides. Only ambulances, hearses, emergency vehicles and those with proper passes will get through. Vehicles coming from Bhattacharya More, Patna Junction or Swaminandan Tiraha won't be allowed to head towards Dak Bungalow either. New Dak Bungalow road stays closed towards SP Verma Road, and the same goes for Govind Mitra and Sabzibagh roads.
Bailey Road and the area around Rajabazar flyover have been completely redrawn. Anyone driving from Saguna More towards the airport will have to take the longer route-Rukanpura, under the Rajabazar overbridge, then Jagdeo Path and BMP.
Those heading to Digha, Rajiv Nagar or Patliputra are being sent via Ashiana-Digha Road. Income Tax roundabout and the nearby junctions will also run under strict control.
Ashok Rajpath has gone one-way in key sections. Small cars can still move between Kargil Chowk and Gandhi Chowk, but from Gandhi Chowk to Gaighat and beyond it's only west to east. Commercial vehicles are banned west of Didarganj. In the older parts of the city, several entry points on Makhaniankuan, Baripath, Nala Road and Patna City remain shut.
Heavy vehicles are completely out of the picture inside municipal limits-no buses, trucks, tractors or those Tata 407s for the next four days. Metro and construction trucks have already been kept off the roads since mid-October. Parking is banned around Gandhi Maidan, SP Verma Road, near Kotwali, Sinha Library, the museum and Buddha Marg. A few designated spots have been marked on Fraser Road, Beerchand Patel Path and some college grounds.
All of this follows the joint briefing DM Kundan Kumar and SSP Kartikey K Sharma held at Gandhi Maidan on Friday. Officers were told in clear terms to stick to the traffic plan, keep a close watch, and make sure people can move between pandals without unnecessary hassle. Drones, extra CCTVs, watch towers and separate entry-exit points at the bigger pandals are all part of the package. The district control room will stay open round the clock on 2219810 and 2219234. Police can also be reached on 9031825979 or simply dial 112....
