PATNA:, July 26 -- A young man narrowly escaped death after an iron reinforcement rod pierced his chest in a rare and life-threatening accident, with trauma surgeons successfully performing emergency surgery to save his life, said a press release issued by the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH). According to PMCH superintendent Dr Rajiva Kumar Singh, the iron rod entered through the patient's upper back, passed through the apex of the right lung and exited from the left side of the chest. Following emergency evaluation and stabilisation, the trauma team, comprising Dr Deepika, Dr Harendra Kumar (M Ch in trauma surgery), Dr Abhishek, Dr Anirudh, Dr Priyanka, Dr Ramniwas, Dr Abhinav, adhered to standard trauma protocols by leaving the impaled object in place until definitive surgery. The patient underwent an emergency thoracotomy during which surgeons carefully removed the rod under direct vision, repaired the injured right lung, controlled bleeding and inserted a chest drain. He is recovering satisfactorily after the operation. Doctors stressed that impaled objects should never be removed at the accident site, as they may temporarily prevent catastrophic internal bleeding. They advised that victims should be transported immediately to a trauma centre, where prompt, coordinated emergency care offers the best chance of survival.
