PATNA, Sept. 16 -- Deputy chief minister and JD(U) senior leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary on Tuesday said a decision on the implementation of the United Civil Code( UCC) in Bihar would be taken only after examining the provisions of the proposed bill and discussions within the JD(U). The JD(U), a senior ally of the BJP in the NDA coalition in Bihar, continues to hold reservations over the implementation of the UCC, which has come back into the national debate after Union home minister Amit Shah's recent statement in Mumbai that the code would be implemented in all 21 NDA ruled states by 2029. "Let the provisions of the proposed UCC bill come before us. We will examine it and then we will discuss about it. Secondly, our working national president (Sanjay Jha) has already stated that after reviewing the provisions, there will be direct talks with the Union home minister regarding them and after that our party will hold a meeting about it," said Chaudhary, while talking to reporters at the JD(U) state office after a Jan Suwai programme. "Deliberations will take place within the party, and a decision will be made thereafter... If we have any concerns or perceive any problems, we will request the home minister to address them...," he said. Earlier on Monday, senior JD(U) leader and former minister Shyam Rajak had voiced that the party had long maintained a stand that UCC would not be implemented in Bihar as stated by former chief minister and party supremo Nitish Kumar, especially since 2017 when while being an NDA ally, Kumar had made his stance clear on the issue. "Our stand remains unchanged even now," Rajak had said. On the other hand, JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha yesterday had taken a line that the matter would be examined and discussed with union home minister Shah in coming days. On Suday, Union home minister Shah had asserted that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented across all 21 states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before 2029. "We introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in several states. I am confident that we will implement the UCC in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029. Operations such as the surgical strikes, air strikes, and Operation Sindoor have established a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, while security has been prioritised across various sectors," Shah had said. The UCC Bill has already been introduced and passed in three states: Gujarat in February 2024, Uttarakhand in March 2026 and Assam in May 2026....
