Dehradun, April 28 -- Congress on Monday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, expressing concerns mounting over overcrowding and arrangements during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra and alleged poor planning and accusing the administration of suppressing voices highlighting difficulties faced by pilgrims. Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Ganesh Godiyal claimed the government failed to prepare adequately for the yatra despite warnings of pressure on infrastructure. "We apprehended from the beginning that arrangements would collapse. The government's focus was never really on the Char Dham Yatra. The chief minister believes only in showmanship," Godiyal alleged, adding that reconstruction in areas affected by last year's disaster was still incomplete and the chief minister should have visited difficult stretches on the pilgrimage route rather than carrying out what he termed "symbolic inspections". He also accused the government of acting against those attempting to "show the reality on the ground", alleging that criticism of arrangements was being met with police action. The remarks come amid a political row over viral social media videos related to crowding, facilities and management along the yatra route. Officials said four FIRs have so far been registered in connection with alleged misinformation and provocative social media content related to the yatra. One separate FIR has also been lodged over vandalism of government property in the Kedarnath area, they said. Rudraprayag superintendent of police Neeharika Tomar said those spreading misleading claims and distorting facts were being dealt with strictly. The BJP hit back at the Congress, saying that the yatra was being conducted in an orderly and smooth manner and accusing the opposition of relying on misleading and politically motivated social media posts to question arrangements. BJP state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said attempts were being made to tarnish the state's image through misinformation. "The Congress' claims are based on misleading posts, despite investigations finding some of them to be part of a planned conspiracy to spread misinformation," Chauhan said. He also dismissed reports of a lathi-charge in the shrine area as false, saying inquiry found the claims baseless."Pilgrims are happy with the arrangements and a positive message is going out across the country. The Congress should refrain from playing with the image of the state."...
